Our decades of wondering if Gilbert will ever reveal the real Secret of Monkey Island is mirrored in the game, with even Guybrush’s wife Elaine musing about why our hero continues to cling to it. In fact, Return obsesses over the foundational mystery far more than any of its predecessors did, and it’s played up to repeated comedic effect. Its overarching story involves – what else – the search for the Secret of Monkey Island, and that quest revolves around Guybrush’s never-ending rivalry with the zombie-pirate villain LeChuck, and their love-not-really-a-triangle with Elaine Marley. That showed me a new side of Monkey Island: its big heart, which becomes quickly evident in the playable Prelude that I won’t spoil here, and keeps getting called back to throughout. It’s the pinnacle of LucasArts' comedy adventures, and Return to Monkey Island is set to be a return to form for the series. And what of the plot? Return is set just after Monkey Island 2, but it’s framed in a clever way I didn’t expect. As Threepwood, you must explore the fictional “Tri-Island Area” in the Caribbean, discover secrets, solve hilarious puzzles, and cross swords and trade insults with undead pirates.

In the process, he must thwart the evil zombie pirate, LeChuck, and win the heart of his beloved, Elaine Marley. The original Monkey Island game features Guybrush Threepwood attempting to become the most notorious pirate in the area. It’s the pinnacle of LucasArts' comedy adventures, and Return to Monkey Island is set to be a return to form for the series. Finally, we also have composers Michael Land, Peter McConnel and Clint Bajakian. Also coming back is Dominic Armato, the original voice of the protagonist, hapless wannabe pirate Guybrush Threepwood. Series creator Ron Gilbert returns as the director and writer, alongside Dave Grossman, who co-wrote the original Monkey Island. Return to Monkey Island features the same talents as the original, making their triumphant return in what is sure to be another laugh-out-loud hit. Thirty-two years after the original Monkey Island and 13 years after Tales of Monkey Island, we finally see the return to this wacky and beloved game series.
